  A sleek, modernized John le Carré tale of intrigue that never was. Fassbender practically plays a version of George Smiley whose marriage ended happily. Much has been discussed on how efficient late-career Soderbergh has been, but this clocking in at a brisk 90 minutes, yet still feeling like a full meal, is a testament to how in command of his craft he is. That dinner scene alone could've been the whole movie, and I would have been equally enraptured. A lesser filmmaker would've padded this out to a 2 and a half hour bore, or worse, a 10 episode prestige miniseries on HBO.
