Heretic 2024
So fun and was really into the originality of this nutty thing! I loved, for the first half especially, not knowing whether Hugh Grant is a psycho serial killer of the Jigsaw variety or just a colossal asshole who wants to mansplain theology and game theory to a captive audience. The third act feels more underdeveloped than the rest and softens in a way that seems dishonest with itself at the very end, but this script and central performance by Hugh Grant are a total blast.

This is such a brightly colored treasure, capable of melting even the iciest hearts. Endlessly imitated but impossible to replicate, pure magic. The final scene is so great, so French, so beautifully sad. What I love most is how, despite being draped in layers of extreme style, Demy is always laser-focused on the emotional reality of his characters.
