A thrill. Visually rich (especially nice costumes and sets), but few images really stuck with me.

Stepping outside, my friend and I walked around town while the city where we live set up for its annual art fair. In some ways an anti-documentary. Instead of taking you deep into the world of his subjects, Herzog mostly presents them as oddballs to be laughed at. The movie covers too much ground, so in addition to lacking any emotional resonance, it also fails the comparatively humble task of providing substantive information. Maybe it's a mimicry of the flattened selves we present on the internet, but more probably it's just a miss for the usually great director.

Visually exciting—the set design in particular is really lush and dense. The plot hops between several convergent storylines in a way that feels a little derivative, but a nice shift in tone about three quarters of the way through the movie adds some weight to what's otherwise a fairly manic affair. The final scene manages to tie things together in surprisingly satisfying fashion, with Cake's cover of "I Will Survive" working somehow as a sentimental denouement.

    Overall: Lots of fun.
