Horrifically real for a movie about 17th century Witches. This period accurate psychological horror film gets under your skin and doesn’t stop till it’s in your nightmares. Scares don’t come in jumps, but rather seep into your skin during long zooming shots, embedding it’s visceral imagery into your memory. A modern classic…corny but accurate.
For a movie that centers around only 2 characters, at a single location, this film breezes by and leaves you wanting more as it’s credits roll. James Wan pays homage to multiple sub-genre of horror in this absurd - but absurdly fun to watch - straight-to-DVD-esq horror/psychological thriller. By it’s final act, Wan is just laughing hysterically at the camera, hoping you get it. Unfortunately, I think the movie marketing failed him. Regardless, the cinematography, action choreography, and visual effects are excellent, with most of the cast cheesing it up enough through its par-for-the-course horror dialogue.
