Spent this whole film confused because they kept referring to Lucius as Maximus’ son, when he most definitely was not Maximus’ son in the original.
Then I looked it up, and it turns out it’s a bad retcon that now makes Maximus seem like he cheated on his beloved wife.
But I did like the historically inaccurate arena sharks 🦈
One of those weird 90s period dramas that centres on a genuinely interesting historical fact about 15th century law courts prosecuting animals and decides for some reason it would be a great vessel for two hours of almost constant female centric nudity.
That being said, this film has a bizarre charm. It’s somewhere between a straight period drama and Blackadder.
I am a vampire film fan and as I've been doing some research I've come across this film for being relevant as possibly the first film to depict the 'vamp' femme fatale archetype. Despite its significance, it seems a shame that from what I can tell, this film exists but is being confusingly gatekept or ignored in an American film museum or possibly mislabelled in the Library of Congress. It is also unclear whether this film exists in its entirety…
