  What an incredible film. This murderer's row of actors do an incredible job navigating this movie's incredibly insightful examination of the price of excellence. So many little specific details, like the girls flipping their eyelids at the national chess tournament, combine with some subtly superb cinematography to elevate this into a classic. A few problematic tropes keep this from being a full 5 stars in my eyes, but I'm so glad I finally caught up with this film!

  Danielle Brooks leaps off the screen and steals every scene she is in. I've loved her since Orange is the New Black and I hope she keeps getting high profile film roles, because she is a star. Fantasia and Taraji P. Henson also give strong lead performances. The costume design and choreography are both excellent.

  There are some great scenes, but the film struggles to hold together. The status quo often changes with adequate work being done to explain it.…
