loses something after the first hour but still solidly entertaining by virtue of hugh grant being deliciously evil.
do kind of wish the religion angle was a misdirect and the film more directly focused on how, for all his pretensions, this guy has created a dungeon for killing and torturing women that allows him to pretend he's doing a noble public service.

went into this expecting a commentary on alcoholism and instead got a very good portrait of toxic masculinity and abuse.
first the good: anne hathaway is really good in this as a colossal fuck-up, someone who is constantly making messes with her life but is smart and witty enough to get people to look past them (up to a point). she is likeable and relatable, a fun hang but not someone you necessarily want to depend on in a crisis.…
man, you’re telling me that silence is no salve for suffering, that it only numbs the pain without repairing the underlying injury, that it abets those who seek to further exploit you for their own ends, that the only way to truly free oneself from continued abuse by powerful forces is to speak out, to seek out others who can share and help articulate your pain, to reject brutal solitude and instead embrace love and intimacy?
