A film as haunting as it is moving. It’s absolutely incredible how this was Ramsey’s directorial debut but simultaneously not surprising as I enjoyed her short film Gasman as well.
From the performances to the cinematography, it’s a film that’s deeply rooted in personal trauma and it’s beautifully and wonderfully portrayed through its themes of guilt, uncertainty, and fear but it’s packaged in this cautiously optimistic tone that feels so poetic in its presentation.
Also, god bless for subtitles.

A film about two families slowly and quietly falling apart. The way this film depicts and portrays heat, grime, and filth is something to be praised on. Scenes that feel like big moments are treated with little care from the characters that it really drives home the themes of the film.
Indifference, malady, and stasis and illustrated in such tranquil and seemingly serene ways that the film slowly gets under your skin, albeit in an incredibly methodical, and borderline tedious way.

Dogme 95’s philosophy works so well with not only the shot selection, direction, and overall aesthetic of this film visually, but works deeply on a thematic level with its darker messaging and how grey this film feels. From its characters to how experimental the sequences feel, especially the dream sequence, it’s a film that represents the true core of this ambitious movement.
