It's a modernized reflection of what Thesis from Amenábar was stating. We live in an era where everything is accessible, therefore everyone is desensitized to violence (especially the one perpetuated to young girls and women). The amount of grotesque pages that can be found on the main web is astonishing. So, imagine what we cannot see. This film captured perfectly the ennui of the modern era, where every click online gives you a sense of adrenaline, plus the darker side of the true crime community. Haven't felt uncomfortable and hopeless in a long, long time.
After a week of seeing people post about this on social media nonstop, I finally got the chance to watch The Substance. And it's one of the bleakiest experience I've had with a movie.

this was so mesmerizing and beautiful..... chantal akerman really knows how to create an intimate atmosphere in her films. i saw myself reflected many times during this, it made me feel like i was reading my own journal entries or was just simply in my room alone with my thoughts. also, the fact that it was raining while watching made the experience more intimate than it already was for me.
