  nothing revolutionary here filmmaking-wise, but some fantastic performances. chalamet and monica barbaro "go electric" (bad pun) and there's a melancholic earnestness to edward norton's pete seeger that I think has been overlooked this awards season. also, bob dylan is infinitely cooler than any pop star, living or dead.

  potentially my favorite fincher film, he does detective dramas so well. the reznor & ross grating soundtrack works best in this gritty, gray, swedish noir. rooney mara also gives a masterclass on how to turn this now-cliche goth-hacker-girl role into something truly wild & transcendent. initially i was bummed that the rest of the trilogy didn't come to fruition (at least with fincher at the helm), but now i'm glad that this film might be respected more as a standalone feature.
