This is Miyazaki’s Iliad, his Divine Comedy. The most beautiful and imaginative animation I’ve ever seen from him. It’s more surreal than any of his other movies and the messaging is a little more obtuse as well but I like how this allows the viewer to personally interpret the message. Where his other movies hold your hand like a dad leading his child through a busy crosswalk, Boy and the Heron exhibits the fear and excitement of taking the training…
