Awaken 2018
Borders on pretentious bullshit- you know what, it is pretentious bullshit. But I'm kinda of all in. Even though it's kind of Michael Bay's "Koyaanisqatsi". Beautiful time lapse and extreme slow motion but doesn't amount to much. Digital cinematography sometimes seems CGI. Can't hold a candle to a scratched and grainy 35mm print of "Baraka". Pretty.

Puzzle of a Downfall Child 1970
Early '70s low-key character piece with a stunning Faye Dunaway in a tour-de-force performance as a model spiraling out of control in a shallow world controlled by men who want a piece of her. Told in a fragmented flashback narrative that echoes her mind state, the film was directed by Jerry Schatzberg (who also directed "Scarecrow" - one of our favorites - stay tuned). An interesting film definitely worth the watch.

One False Move 1991
Nifty, dark crime noir from the early '90s that's been hard to see. Finally on blu ray through Criterion. First screenplay from Billy Bob Thornton (with Tom Epperson) and directed by the great Carl Franklin. Violent and disturbing and suspenseful and goes in directions you wouldn't expect. Great Bill Paxton role, supported by Cynda Williams and Billy Bob Thornton himself, with a chilling turn from Michael Beach. Worth seeking out if you like low budget thrillers.
