They didn’t cut any of the songs, which is such an unexpected and relieving green flag, and has me so damn excited for part 2. Everybody blows me away. Pretty fun movie with two utterly fantastic scares (both courtesy of the effects department), a fun setting, and some general tropey horror shit too. It had me a lot more entertained and invested than Halloween did, and I might actually check out the sequels.
Lots of good direction. Lots of horror tropes. Not much explanation. Jamie Lee Curtis is great as Laurie. Donald Pleasence is laughably ridiculous as Loomis, the man living in a completely different genre from the rest of the cast in a way that I don’t think was intentional on the part of the filmmakers. The slice of life bits are great, the horror parts are freaky. Is Michael Myers meant to be genuinely supernatural or not? And did John Carpenter mean to leave it ambiguous or did he just do a poor job of communicating what he intended to? The world may never know.
A gorgeous, sweeping epic and a meaty text to sink my teeth into and engage with morally. Russell Crowe’s presence is incredible and his voice makes me want to swoon. I’ve watched this so many times and it’s an experience every time. Even being full anti-theist as I am, the final reprise always makes me tear up with how beautiful & emotional it is.
