On Lionsgate DVD, at home. There was no reason to make this a Rambo film, except as a way to find funding, presumably. We're so far afield from the character, despite the massive change between the first and subsequent three films, that it becomes a distraction throughout the runtime. I spent as much time on this question watching the film as I worked - and failed - to really understand Rambo's connection to Maria and Gabriela, and exactly why he…

On Fox Blu-ray, at home. Perhaps the full, nearly three-hour cut preferred by the writer and director would improve this film, which makes one feel the large, painful cuts as subplots disappear and key characters rapidly become afterthoughts, but that much of a runtime is a big ask. Hackman is phenomenal here and singlehandedly carries the film on his massive shoulders, though Hopper turns in good work as the town drunk. The film steps into every cliche, though, and while not dull, it never really gets going, either. Reasonably entertaining.

Streaming on Kanopy, at home. With Bob. Nothing more than a puzzle-box, and not a particularly interesting one at that. The performances are flat aside from the always-reliable Pantoliano. The film spends so much time on red-herrings (Dodd) that it fails to get back to the beginning in favor of bringing on Ernie the Explainer to tell you what happened before in order to protect a lackluster twist. A pointlessly cynical film.

Streaming on Max, at Anne's. With Anne. A beautiful film with fascinating "handheld" cinematography. A lovely ode to found families, the film occasionally feels repetitive and there's not always much on its mind, but it's very strong nonetheless.
