The paint is drying, and time is dying.
Somewhere between the shaky handheld VHS cameras and La Belle Epoque decor, Vinterberg critiques the elite in this masterful work of Danish cinema. Clearly an inspiration for Lars von Trier and Ruben Östlund, ‘Festen’ catches the nobility with - quite literally - their pants down, highlighting the human tragedy behind the Bacchanalia.
Masterpiece.
Agnes is able to tap into the potential of a seemingly insignificant topic - gleaners, traditionally collectors of unharvested fruit and vegetables, and showcase the judicial, moral and ethical considerations behind their craft. She does not care to be the neutral documentary filmmaker, she wants to be partial, have us see the world through her eyes and appreciate the beauty of the world around her, and through that, around us.
The magnificent camerawork and gripping narration make this the most wonderful documentary that I've ever stumbled across.
