It might be worth it just to see Jon Voight playing a gnarled Paraguayan with a truly dreadful Spanish accent just to appreciate how far we’ve come on the representation front…

    ★★★★★

A lovely exploration of the romanticized vision of our younger selves and what could of been while keenly aware of the dull reality of our current experience. The plot, while well constructed, is not the meat of this potential Best Picture contender, but rather the cinematography, direction, and anatomy of simplicity. This movie, though somber in tone, is a delight to cinema fans who will appreciate the subtle ways in which the world outside the main characters does so much of the heavy lifting in showing the inner, unspoken, words of our leads allowing for effortless performances portraying great grief, anxiety, tension, and of course love.

    Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning

    ★★★½

As with prior installments, epic action sequences mixed with visceral close combat. A hallmark of these movies is combat in environments that themselves present a life or death razor edge, i.e. the roof of a train, the back of a cargo jet with the cargo door open. Dead reckoning revisits the familiar train roof but finds a fun way to utilize the peril of a runaway train that drives continued tension and character development.

Hayley Atwell is magnetic and well utilized.

Tom Cruise is the superstar he's always been.

Ving and Simon round out the experience and familiarity.
