More than anything, this is a thrilling, entertaining action film with well constructed characters that we care about and enjoy watching. Because this is old, non-English language, black & white and made by a famous director, this is may be considered an art house movie in the west, but in actuality Seven Samurai demonstrates how a big budget genre action movie can be a beautiful, rewarding artwork when made with such care, talent and dedication. Faces Places 2017
As an artist, this is the kind of film that makes you want to switch off halfway through and go immediately to work on your own stuff. I’m not sure that JR would be a very interesting subject in his own, but he’s great as a foil to Varda, and in coaxing this last great film from her. It’s warm film that manages to be uplifting and nostalgic without wallowing in sentimentality. Stand out moments:

Elegantly shot, eminently watchable period piece. Although I was engrossed through the process of watching, at the film’s conclusion I felt less moved than I had anticipated by the piece as a whole. Nonetheless, there are still many standout moments, such as:
