This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
A film focused solely on aesthetics and the gaze of soulless critic shills. It offers zero real story. However, the acting of Jolie and Smit-McPhee is at least commendable; however mildly unconvincing. Cinematography is reminiscent of an ersatz Wes Anderson, mostly in the framing, not in the magic. It ticks the boxes of a film school marker, but not that of a general audience. Artsy? Yes. Entertaining? Wouldn’t say so.
It insists upon itself.
Never mind. I cried at the ending.
Heath Ledger is a masterful actor and this is his magnum opus. A riveting performance from a great actor taken from us too soon. Nolan's directorship is masterful and Bale's acting as Bruce Wayne/Batman is par with the course (for this film). A dark study of surveillance and over-policing resultant of 9/11, this is a thematic masterclass. Why so serious?
