Gives a backstory to a character most have heard of. At points in the movie I forgot about the overarching theme we all knew would one day be his future, murder, and instead hyper focused on the neglect he endured. I felt for him and while I don’t agree whatsoever, it makes a lot of sense to me why he felt the need to have ultimate control- deciding to end lives.
I rewatched this for the first time as an adult and I was touched. The songs were a bit unexpected but cute. The realism of Charlie being both good and bad in juxtaposition with Carface being purely evil really amplified the depth of relatability for me. I went into it thinking my I would enjoy it mainly because of the nostalgia factor and the last scene. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was invested in several scenes.
The art! The lovable characters! The music! The balance of whimsy and reality! I remember watching this as a child and it and it scaring me, but as an adult it resonated so deeply with me. I would absolutely recommend
It was nice to watch a queer take on a love story, but to me it very much was that: a basic love story. If you’re looking for a glimpse into a life outside your own, or otherwise to see yourself represented in media, then I’d say go for it. However, with the catch that it was a bit raunchy at times, it felt pretty Hallmark and cheesy. Would I recommend or rewatch? No. Would I say it’s a bad movie? Also no.
