A razor sharp exploration of art consuming the divine feminine. Aesthetic value above all else, the bondage and trapping of purity.

Winding Refn is undisputed. The camera is obsessed with then 16 year old Elle Fanning, unhurriedly panning across her face and body for nearly the entire runtime. Constantly comparing and contrasting her to the women surrounding her in a way that is both uncomfortable and indisputable.

    Major spoilers ahead.

The literal consumption of Fanning’s character is telegraphed early on,…

There’s a through line from Crash to Crimes of the Future where Cronenberg explores the idea that transformation, sex, and human transcendence are tied to and born from trauma. If Crash depicts the transformation as unpredictable and happening in the moment - in a split second - Crimes draws the moment out slowly and puts it under the microscope for the full runtime.

In Crash, the character of Dr. Vaughan turns the re-enactment of James Dean’s fatal car crash into…

There’s a certain quality to this film that’s hard to describe. It’s aimless in a way that really fits the subject matter and the characters who populate the world. The most nihilistic hangout movie.

    Mild spoilers ahead.

If you’ve known people like the characters in this film it’s uncomfortable to watch. Hopper plays a hopeless alcoholic and plays drunk better than anyone I’ve ever seen in a film before. I grew up with a lot of Cebe’s and Linda Manz’s…

Bringing the 70’s grit to the mid 80’s just works. Friedkin is firing on all cylinders here with shots of total LA porn for anyone who knows the city. It moves super fast, lots of leather, synth, beer, sunglasses, cigarettes, sex, and violence. Not to mention a great LA car chase scene that reminded me of a less claustrophobic French Connection

Something about counterfeit bills just isn’t as exciting a pursuit as it maybe could have been and the whole…

Probably my favourite of the Eggers films I’ve seen. Strong performances from the cast with a handful of notable exceptions.

It’s hard to see Depp’s performance without thinking of Isabelle Adjani. Just reaching for Adjani in Possession means inevitably falling short. That said the flatter moments of her performance are few and far between. Similarly while Skarsgård was all in and to great effect, I found my mind constantly wandering to Kinski.

The set and costume design are 10/10 here, it’s nice…
