Jeffrey begins the narrative with an external opposition and comes to discover that it is really an internal opposition. He is perverse and must decide to disavow or accept it.

The Sickness Unto Death (is Despair)
A man yearns to feel youth again. But youth was precisely the lack of a need to be anything other than himself.
He can never be young again, and he can never escape the fact that he has (always already) failed. But he can choose to be himself again—that is, he can open up to his despair and become reconciled to it, rather than live a life of quiet denial and disavowal of his castration.

A great existentialist film (with nice homages to Kierkegaard) about anxiety, yearning, aging and embracing the void.

I am certain this film is Lacanian I just don’t know how yet. Reality is structured like a fiction, retroactivity of meaning, return of the repressed.
