New Life opens with the main character (Jess) on the run. We are then introduced to Elsa, the head of a task force charged with finding her before she crosses the border into Canada. The story changes rapidly at about the halfway point, and we quickly learn why this film is classified as horror.
What I enjoyed about this film was the fast-paced approach to an otherwise confusing story. Haunting or cross-dimensional beings, that part of the plot is never fully fleshed out. I did really appreciate the practical effects and sound design; however, the score was a bit distracting. I also enjoyed the well-timed jump scares—just enough to keep me on the edge of my seat.
Toxic relationships isn’t my favorite theme, so I went into this film with a lot of apprehension. The first act was interesting. Blu Hunt and Ben Smith-Petersen are definitely eye candy. So many scenes are beautifully framed, and the color grading is so gorgeous. The problem is the script. It’s all over the place. Stopmotion opens with the main plot point of the film, the trauma that can occur when there’s an overbearing mother. It then takes us down a spiral of uncertainty and madness. This is a slow burn film filled with dread and unease. I love how the director uses color to convey the emotion of the main character. I quickly found myself wondering what is real and what is imagined…who is the animator and who is being animated? This is a visually stunning film and the sound design takes mundane actions and makes them horrific. The final act certainly went places I was not expecting.
