Equally entertained and disappointed on this one.
Eggers doesn’t disappoint in terms of world building, ever. You’re fully immersed in the time period, and the references to the original films are nicely done, plus beautiful new takes from him on this edition. It felt nostalgic but worthwhile.
Where I was disappointed. was that many of the characters felt deeply two dimensional. Having Willem Dafoe in your arsenal and not using that to your advantage is a painfully dumb move. On…
Very well directed and great pacing throughout. Nykiya Adams was phenomenal.
As can be expected from Andrea Arnold, there
were many, many moments I wanted to look away. But there were also many moments I wanted to dive headfirst into. The perfect balance between tenderness and the gritty reality that some people face, is what she does so well. I’m just glad she finally got the VFX budget she always deserved. Bzzzzzz.
Oh my god.
I’m calling this the best film of 2023 even though it came out this year, because it smooshes all other films into the ground.
As an adaptation, it reanimated (ha ha) an incredible source in a way that birthed a whole new thing, one that will live on for years, in the way of social-critique fantasy (reminiscent of greats like Rocky Horror etc).
Even long term Lanthimos fans will find themselves surprised by just how accessibly funny…
The Menu, like so many other films seen in LFF and festivals this year, jumped well and truly on the ‘critiquing society and capitalism’ bandwagon (Triangle of Sadness, Men etc etc). Paved most poignantly by Bong Joon-ho and Jordan Peele, this road is not one easily tread, and filmmakers often fall short. (Special mention to Rose Glass’s incredible Saint Maude that really did wonders).
The Menu cleverly uses Fiennes theatre expertise and Taylor-Joy’s joyful range however, the film, although enjoyable and jumpy for a casual weeknight’s viewing, sadly won’t be going down in history. Hope that’s not too hard a lump to swallow!
