It was the shot of Kikuchiyo, our brusquely affable peasant turned monkey man warrior, drunkenly bumbling and stumbling around the hostel, culminating in a downwards pan of the camera as he slumped from a higher wooden post to a lower one, where it really clicked for me. A shot so mundane yet so controlled and intentional, highlighting both sides of his character in an instant and perfectly contrasting him with the more mature, mentally (and physically) stable samurai behind him.…

Nearly a triple bagel in narrative structure, with a strong opening that sets up the players, a slightly ponderous yet increasingly tense middle act, and an exhilarating conclusion that doesn't at all feel like a traditional resolution. There's no hero's journey here - rather the kind of messy, realistic product of three toxic individuals interacting with each other in the most intimate yet manipulative of ways.
