I think the reason I disliked this movie so much is because it so clearly tries so hard to be Alexander Payne’s Downsizing (2017). It doesn’t take long to see the similarities and where this movie goes awry:
1) whimsical and fun first act that borders on the fantastical? ✅
2) jarring switch to a completely different plot line about halfway through the movie in a way that makes almost no sense? ✅
3) moving second act that touches on…
Alexander Payne’s allegorical account of the dangers of global warming is both incredibly witty and remarkably prescient. What started as a fun family friendly movie about self-acceptance as a metaphorically small person in a big big world soon transcended into a moving melodrama about coming to terms with change, both physical and in one’s marital relationships. Right as the movie reaches what the viewer thinks is the climax, the tone (and theme and plot) shifts completely to a compelling tale…
Good movie. Lots of fun laughs. Only a little bit of uncomfortable romantic tension between a 21 year old and someone twice her age during a weird scene at the Golden Gate Bridge. Also makes you question how Owen Wilson has had such a successful career without anyone telling him he should get a haircut. Would watch again.
