“I wanna be a part of something bigger! Something that lasts, that means something!”

What an outrageous, maximalist masterpiece. Each frame bursting with life. How can great art come from such exploitative and immoral places? How can Manny, after all the exploitation, deviance, and near death experiences in the film industry, still love and appreciate the art form? How can we have confidence that our legacy will live on past our short lives on this earth? Art reflects life. It…

Super fun and highlights the current right-wing political insanity through unhinged, violent satire.. but it never even charters the brilliance and intelligence of its predecessor. Keeping us on the ship for most of the movie can be suffocating and it’s often hard to emotionally connect with these characters. Stronger writing would’ve helped a lot. Bong Joon Ho’s directing and the good performances help elevate this beyond a YouTube skit, but it’s ultimately nothing that hasn’t been said and done before. It’s similar to last year’s A Real Pain - not awful, not great - very meh with a lot of potential.

Why in the world would you make this if it’s going to be made in the most basic, predictable, forgettable, and boring way possible. It’s old people nostalgia porn, which I guess is why my theater looked like the fucking RNC. A complete nothing.

How can you have convictions about a film without any? This is a tiring and stiff film about an evil political regime that somehow manages to be pretty much apolitical. It’s extremely tame and takes no creative risks. These are utterly uninteresting characters portrayed in the most boring ways. Fernanda Torres gives a good performance but even that seems overrated.

The last scene gave good perspective to the horror of her suffering that has weighed her down and made her almost numb. That was very well done.

Overall I was very disappointed and it was tough to finish.
