If you ignore all the psychotic, toxic alpha-male bullshit that came from this within my generation, you'll find that this has held up beautifully and is pretty timeless. Sharp, memorable dialogue, and has something to say with a great message (no, not the one that 4chan incels took from it). A classic example of "love the movie, hate the fanbase."

I can't put my finger on it, but this was extremely effective to me, and I bought into it all. Pugh and Garfield's chemistry was palpable, and even though it's a traditional drama/cancer story, the tension and dynamics between the two was engaging and magnetic.
