"No hay banda. There is no band. Il n'est pas de orquestra. This is all a tape-recording." Incredible and prescient images. As if I could find Debbie Harry any sexier. At its weakest, however, in explicating one of its central lines: "It has a philosophy and that's what makes it dangerous." It is, but I'm not sure this does.

The allure, and the danger, of interpreting and overinterpreting ("He'd kill US if he got the chance"). I forgot how intense and beautiful the dream sequence is. Incredible to see and more importantly *hear* this in a theater. Like Alec Guinness in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Gene Hackman's facial expressions and silences convey loneliness in an incredibly moving way. Simply one of my favorite movies of all time.

Asking for a translucent raincoat for my birthday.

A man so horny, it drove him mad in two different centuries.

    Exiles: Edward Said

Although he died more than 20 years ago, Edward Said remains, for obvious reasons, a vital intellectual voice for our time. His existential reflections here on the tragedy but also the benefits of "exile" are beautiful examples of his eloquent articulation of "the question of Palestine." When you see the asinine and insulting questioning he had to endure from Western journalists, asking him to disavow terrorism or condescendingly characterizing his "coldness," the injustice to which he was giving voice is all the more apparent.
