very much tracks as an overlong throwaway episode of the x files, especially compared to what the franchise would become. tony todd scene was by far the best part.

watched this for the first time in 10 years. could write a lot but not really worth it, very much an obama-era product which luxuriates in a tactless fetishization of blackness while denying its black characters save sam jackson anything close to complexity. i’ll go to bat for a few tarantino films but this isn’t one of them, it’s all his worst/insidious impulses made plain.

a nauseating first act (perhaps intentionally?) gives way to an incredibly effective portrayal of disposability and exchange in/humanity, which is much less ‘sex positive’ than the marketing would have you believe. there’s many little exchanges with service workers throughout the movie that really bring everything home, sometimes more effectively than the main story which teeters on romanticization early on (hence the nausea).
