While the script had its shortcomings, punctuated by only half a dozen memorable zingers, Jolie and the cinematography were undeniably stunning. She commanded every frame, delivering a captivating mix of sass and pathos. The film felt like an analogous world for Jolie, as if she was channeling her own pain and life experiences into the role. It was beautiful and moving. Still, in the end, it was a classic case of the performance outshining the movie itself.

Prestige cinema. Stunning cinematography. Immersive world. Looks ravishing. Incredible performances from Defoe, Starsgard and Depp.

And yet, at the end of the day, it's ultimately a fairytale with little nuance or character development. Even such a highly-stylised and beautifully crafted fairytale can only do so much for me. Still, for what it aims to do, top-notch work.

Had so much potential, but the first-person POV got gimmicky after a while and didn't add much. So many stunning shots, but was trying too hard to be artsy; didn't lead to an emotional payoff for me.

Incredible cinematography though. This was an ambitious, innovative adaptation that took risks. Though it didn't entirely resonate with me, the artistry and commitment to vision gives one hope in a landscape dominated by formula.
