I am so appreciative of Jean-Marie Teno’s ability to fully capture us through his HILARIOUS, snarky, and sarcastic narration that blossoms newness in an exploration of realities many of us are already aware of—the sham that is the colonial idea of “African [under]development”. The other option from a humorous approach is full ANGER…so why not yes, be angry, but move that tension towards the softening of our bellies after an insistent gasping for good air and stretching of our jaws!!!…

The visuals and movement in this are incredible. I think I would’ve loved it even more if it were on a bigger screen, but every gush of wind, the flutter of all fabric, the reaching of every wave, and nana’s tenacious love embodied in her trust in even the smallest speck of an herb, still felt so so adjacent…I had put it off for so long but this was definitely the perfect time for it.

This review is to purposefully document how our stories are inaccessible to us. How is an anthology film about queer and trans Kenyans now ONLY available through the British Film Institute AND behind a paywall?
I am sooooo tired of African films being captured into European ownership: the same people that pride themselves in certain freedoms now that are denied to us because they instituted violent penal codes in our continent.

Reclaiming all our stories forever and ever. Not an ask but a demand and a spell. Our stories are OURS.

still lives up to my internal hype. still mostly enjoyable and makes more sense if you have been an alcoholic or loved alcoholics. still a great reminder that 🦭 seals are our rock angels. still a wonderful parallel to why i love being sober why i love spending time alone why i love the ocean and the joys of being alive despite the terrors.
