Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Despite all this talk of the 'Snyder Cut', the most striking thing about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the absence of almost everyone's favourite superhero character: Superman.

The titular hero has an abysmal line-up in this blockbuster, featuring no Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern or Aquaman in any meaningful way. There's no real action here except for a fight sequence which remains pure superhero movie action. The sheer scale of this movie is staggering: 75 story beats spread across the entire film.

It's easy to see why even the stuffy Academy fell for Bong Joon-ho's razor-sharp social satire, in which urchins are gathered into an underground martial arts school where they train to fight against a mechanical monster (who sounds suspiciously like Alien). Sometimes it's absurdist snark, like the students taking their lessons on waterfowl via a mini-submarine. Other times, the very real horrors of war and the mental and physical brutality of war are implied through ways that remain far removed from the PG-13 blood and gore seen in many Hollywood movies.

From the opening minutes of Martin Scorsese's latest epic, I was impressed by the visual flair and direction of the film. The characters of Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem are inherently eerie, but their activity in this universe of the year 2528 is mostly anachronistic. Still, their scenes are perfectly placed to add dimension to the plot and the material. Once again, as you've probably noticed from earlier, why I wanted to write about this is because the film offers enough little touches of realism that I ended up enjoying
