A bizarre portrayal of alternate-universe Winnipeg that is both intensely familiar and strangely unique. The stark cold brutalism of the city highlights the warmth of its interior spaces and communities, which is must be especially true for immigrants from radically different climates. Super funny in a deadpan, Wes Anderson style, while the climax is devastatingly sad and sobering. Loved this one.

The structure and pacing of the story felt unique, and there's a lot of fun, out of control conflicts and comedy, but it still felt very lacking. It paints a portrait of a sex worker who can clearly handle herself, but it's lacking in depth, and largely centered around the male gaze. We learn very little about Anora outside her occupation, and when it finished I was just a bit disappointed. Not sure why all the hype around this one.

Overall I enjoyed it, although I'm not usually a fan of musicals or opera-inspired movies. I had seen Hugh Jackman in musicals, and I'm always blown away by his performance. Russel Crowe however was a bit meh as Javert. Anna Hatheaway was amazing. I think it was the music itself that didn't quite hook me, although I loved the story.

Gruesome campy cultist horror at it's best!
