Bong once again nailing a unique tone of quirky humour, unsettling story, and deep sadness. Hye-ja Kim gives an amazing and complex performance carrying a movie that went places I didn't expect. Even minor characters are given colourful details that make this story as a whole feel uncomfortably real.
This movie has no business not being great. Sam Raimi directing, Christopher Young score, stacked cast (including a surprisingly good Keanu as a real POS), written by Billy Bob Thornton based on his own grandmother.
So why is it so boring? Ultimately I blame the script, but I also wouldn't be surprised if Raimi had his wings clipped on this one, it's out of character for him to make a lifeless movie even when the script -is- bad.
The impressive thing about this movie is that Zombie managed to take two of his most memorable and scary characters and make them boring. Classic mistake of humanizing them and showing us the mundane. As fun as it should be to see them again there was no justifiable reason to.
The two plot lines stop it from gaining any momentum and then when they finally converge it basically grinds to a halt.
RIP Sid Haig.
