  Where The Force Awakens stuck uncomfortably close to the plot of A New Hope, The Last Jedi dares to surprise and succeeds brilliantly. Nit-pickers like yours truly, unfortunately, can't help but be repeatedly torn out of the movie expierence by shoehorned comic relief and quite a couple of scenes requiring enormous extents of disbelief-suspension, but that would seem to come naturally with a film that is forced by collective expectations to appeal to an audience of hundreds of millions across all age groups. Once I get my head-canon figured out for this one, I believe I will be more than able to enjoy it wholeheartedly.
