Just rewatched this recently, and OMG I forgot how amazing and camp this was! The first 5 minutes immediately gets you hooked, the sets, Catherine O’Hara was soooo good. The animation style, the spookiness. It’s silly and nostalgic, 10/10.
Didi felt like what a lot of Asian Americans experienced growing up in the US in 2008 - the myspace and music choices really brought me back. It’s a coming of age story, so it makes sense that there were a lot of cringey parts and the immaturity really made me upset at times. At the same time, it really showed the nuances of living in an Asian American house hold - figuring out your identity away from home, confused…
