Gareth Evans’ folk horror film is a real change of pace from his Indonesian-based Raid epics. Often brutal and grim (particularly the last third of the film), it’s nevertheless a bold attempt by Evans to break out of the ‘action director’ tag. The cast especially Stevens, Sheen and Lewis-Jones are all excellent and the film is beautifully shot by Evans and his DP Matt Flannery. It has its flaws mostly with pacing issues but overall it’s a tense, bloody and nerve shredding addition to Gareth Evans’ growing reputation as a filmmaker of note. It’s just a shame it won’t get a theatrical release.

The Predator 2018
Disappointing sequel that never lives up to the hype and expectations. Some interesting ideas and some excellent over the top gore saves it from being a total disaster. The last third makes no sense however with bizarre character developments and serious plot holes. Olivia Munn does her best as does an underused Thomas Jane but generally one of Shane Black’s more disappointing efforts.
