Whether or not you're a musician, this film explores the undeniable line between passion and obsession. Andrew Neiman could have very easily walked out on Fletcher and his Shaffer band after being embarrassed by not figuring out in his first rehearsal if he was rushing or dragging. But Andrew's pursuit of greatness in his craft superseded any conventional logic.
Was Fletcher abusive in his approach? Flat-out yes, but when you have an unquenchable desire to be the best, nothing else…

When I watch this movie, I don't look at it as a caricature of the Italian Mafia. Robert DeNiro and the rest of the mob cast bring a very nice authenticity to it. It's not overly violent, and it doesn't have to be.
