When Marnie Was There 2014
i think the meaning of this film gets a little lost in translation from Japanese to English. In the context of Japanese culture where individuality is a lot less celebrated and assimilation is vital, Anna isn’t perceived as an unlikeable character, but reality for many of us. The weight of not coming from a traditional family with biological parents is heavier in Japan where it’s a lot more taboo.
