I really enjoyed Strong Island. As I have voiced before, I really like documentaries because they often comment on important real world issues and I love validity and realism in a film. In a time where racial issues are at the forefront in our country, I think this film does a good job commenting on racism in government/court. One specific thing I noticed was the camera work, which used a lot of close ups when interviewing people, specifically the director…
Overall, not my favorite movie. However, there were many elements that made the film a successful project and the directorial choices Kobayashi and the cinematographer make are well done. One thing I definitely noticed was the color palate in the movie, as it really helped to convey the messages within each of the 4 mini-stories. Cleo from 5 to 7 was an interesting film, discussing many different elements from 1960s France like feminism, self-obsession, and even the Algerian independence crisis. Some things I noticed in the movie that highlighted these were the consistent presence of mirrors that Cleo would look into, men wearing dark clothes and Cleo wearing white, and the consistent hints at the Algerian crisis made obvious by the presence of the soldier Cleo meets towards the end. I think the movie did a fairly good job at communicating all of these points through elements other than direct speaking, through implicit meaning rather than explicit ones.
