    In the contemporary remake, there are typically three purposes: the modern retelling (Romeo + Juliet) the gritty reimagining (True Grit) or the cultural takeover (Oldboy, Let the Right One in). Spielberg is making a move here that is characteristic of new Hollywood, but subtly unnerving.

    Dune comes along in a special time in Villeneuve’s catalogue in which his tropes have been explored and analysed, leaving his contemporary work a reshuffling, and refocusing of his prior obsessions onto a new canvas. Many other contemporary directors can suddenly become stale and comfortable, only to erupt hidden jewels infrequently (Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson come to mind) but each new Villeneuve project is a reaching out of ideas instead of a pulling back in.
