saw @ anthology film archives. probably the grimmest Fassbinder I've seen yet (except maybe The Merchant of Four Seasons, which is so grim as to be comedic). the slaughterhouse scene near the opening visibly distressed the audience, a few people squirming in their seats, shying their eyes away. but what a scene!—gushing buckets of blood spilling from the half-severed heads of these cows sentenced to the most mechanical brutality, while Volker Spengler delivers this rabid monologue from Goethe's Torquato Tasso.…
