Oh my god. How can I ever watch any other production of this, much less any other musical? I love the recognition of the queer "soul of Berlin" or, really, "soul of cabaret" (as a genre of performance). I bought a copy of Christopher Isherwood's The Berlin Stories and will begin reading them today. I need to learn much much more about Marlene Dietrich. I can't believe the bisexuals exist.

Technical opinions: I don't like how Studio Ponoc films always heavily mimic the Ghibli style. I thought that the departures from the Ghibli animation style were some of its strong suits - the intensely technical realism of movement of human characters, the work with having both soft and hard edges to shadows on everything, the tasteful use of a blend of 2d and 3d for rendering complex settings and movements through them. Willy Wanker's chocolate appears out of thin air but props to the film makers for emphasizing the imperial origins of chocolate using anything but chocolate as a stand-in. Chalamet's acting in this felt shaky at times. I could've sworn that I blinked and he turned into Franz Kafka a couple of times.
