This film my follow the three act structure to the tee, and is a great example for film students. However the contemporary high schoolers meets the witty dialogue of a classic noir film does not sit well. The fusion of these worlds comes off as pretentious for example, main character Brendan looks like a typical teenager, but spews out different philosophical statements that would not fit if actual teen came face to face with the murder of a girlfriend or uncovering a huge crack case.
