Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- 2025
Saw this in the theater and really enjoyed myself. Hideaki Anno gave Godzilla, Ultraman, and Kamen Rider a shot in the arm, so why not Gundam? If you aren't a scholar of the One Year War, the first part is going to be a little hard to parse, but that's really just set dressing. After that, it settles into a more traditional "ordinary kid finds a giant robot" narrative. I haven't watched that much modern anime but the style of the second part made me think of FLCL, very zany and doesn't always take itself too seriously. And it works!

Midsommar 2019
One of my favorite films of 2019. A deep dive into grief, as well as a cautionary tale about how to avoid being a bad boyfriend. All of the horrible stuff is committed by beautiful people, in beautiful scenery in broad daylight.
I saw it twice in theaters, the second time in the form of The Director's Cut. I don't think the deleted scenes added anything to the experience, and I won't spoil anything but there's one scene in particular…
