Though this film had good concepts it was simply not executed that great. Beyond Keanu’s performance feeling somewhat flat, the general feeling of urgency from the characters were a bit lack luster. There were no stakes that the world was about to be destroyed, we saw no bystanders or anyone else experiencing the impending state of doom. The whole movie felt as if the viewer and characters were isolated from the rest of the world, and pair that with acting (that was a bit dull), you get an ok 2000s doomsday film.
An excellent experience into the world of David Byrne and the visuals that resemble fond memories from the music of Talking Heads. Something that I really loved about this film was the production and cinematography, it has this gorgeous plainness where I need to occasionally pause and just sit with the subject and negative space. Though the plot seems simple at first, the way Byrne crafts people and place enables a connection to the everyday life of the small town, and an emotional link to our own simply plotted lives. Mix that with superb original music and you have a true art house classic.
