In the Mood for Love along with all of Wong Kar-Wai’s films does something which most western directors wouldn’t dare; it isn’t so much what he does or what he shows us, it is what he chooses not to. The title in itself nearly assures us what is to come, and yet it couldn’t be further from that expectation. It seems to me he believes there are…
To me Kurosawa is the greatest director of all time. This is one of the few movies I’ve seen where I could not have predicted what the film would be about. My advice, go in blind, don’t watch a trailer. Every single shot, line of dialog and expression pushes the story forward. Kurosawa blocks actors the way symphony conductors conduct the orchestra. It is a perfect film.
Films like this are rare. Smoke feels very much like an intimate stage play, a deeply intimate study of character and humanity with none of today’s cliches. The story feels in many ways, ahead of its time. Each of the actors share some of their most compelling work, and that’s saying a lot considering their filmographies leading up to this film. Sometimes a story is so special it’s better to simply say, watch it, and let it do its work on you.
