The main problem with this Captain America movie is that it’s not a Captain America movie. Sam Wilson’s character is interesting, and his reflections on never feeling like he is enough, like he is an equal to Steve Rodger and likes might resonate with many oppressed communities. But all this is completely unrelated with the main plot of the movie. Maybe I’m not up-to-date with MCU lore, but to me all these remnants of Hulk’s movie had nothing to do with Wilson. Nor did they add any development to overall MCU story - no brave new world here.
An atmospheric elevated horror that starts from a well-known trope of a bullied boy, who “turns evil” to protect himself, and transforms into something smarter, more profound and more sinister. Sometimes a man who managed to galvanize the whole society is not a supervillain. Or a villain. He is just a mediocre bad person. Who has reasons to be the way he is (everyone has those) and still doesn’t have an excuse.
Sometimes a movie that managed to galvanize the whole society is not a masterpiece. Nor is it a complete trash. It is just a mediocre musical and a dull drama with stellar cast that will be of interest…
