A grueling depiction of war in its most natural format, Grave of the fireflies presents its daunting themes to its audience from the beginning yet by the end I was still left shocked at how far the brutality of bloodshed was taken as a concept. For the most part it kept me engaged throughout its tightly knit runtime with wonderfully evocative performances alongside the simplistically stunning visuals that I have come to expect when viewing old anime films.
