Idk, I can't quite bring myself to view this film as a critique of those who do not believe in God, as much as a critique of blind rationalism as a replacement for a God. And even then. I do not see freak accidents as divine punishment, and I feel that it is callous to do so, but I get the point of like...trying to find meaning in everything. The shot of Mary with the candlewax tears may haunt me forever. Sacrifice, the heaviness of parenthood, the presence of absence.
